Heinz W. Engl (born March 28, 1953 in Linz ) is an Austrian mathematician. The university professor for industrial mathematics at the Johannes Kepler University Linz was Vice Rector from October 2007 and has been Rector of the University of Vienna since October 2011 . Since 2003 he has been a real member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Life

Engl studied technical mathematics at the Johannes Kepler University Linz and graduated in 1977 with a doctorate sub auspiciis Praesidentis . In 1979 he completed his habilitation. From 1981 he was an associate professor until he was appointed full professor for industrial mathematics in 1988. From 1992 to 1999 he was head of the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Mathematical Modeling and Numerical Simulation ; from 1994 to 2003 member of the board of trustees and speaker of the FWF . From 1995 to 2000 he was dean of the technical and natural science faculty .

In 1996 he founded MathConsult GmbH , a company with 30 employees for software development and computer simulation (including the manufacture of instruments for calculating the price development of financial derivatives), in which he is a 100% shareholder. More than half of the 50 most important banks in Austria and other companies in the financial sector from more than 20 countries are customers of this company (according to website).

In addition, Engl was also a university professor, dean, head of the Christian Doppler Laboratory and member of the FWF Board of Trustees, from 2000 to 2003 also a corresponding member of the mathematical and natural science class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and a full member since 2003. Since 2003 he has also been director of the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (RICAM) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, which is located at the JKU .

From 2003 to 2007 he was also a member and Vice Chairman of the University Council of Graz University of Technology , for the term of office from October 2007 to September 2011 Vice Rector for Research and Career Development at the University of Vienna , for the term of office from October 2011 to September 2015 Rector of the University of Vienna. He was reappointed by the University Council and Senate for a second and in January 2018 for a third four-year term as Rector of the University of Vienna from October 2019 to the end of September 2023.

He has been a full member of the Academia Europaea since 2013 . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .

Heinz Engl was a member of the Rotary Club Linz Süd from 1994 to 2012 and has been a member of RC Vienna ever since.

Engl has been married since 1980 and has daughters Elisabeth and Magdalena with his wife Rosa. According to his own communication, he is the grandfather of the New Year's baby 2020 in the US capital Washington DC, Eleon Engl-Misirlisoy.
