biography

Study and sculpture

From 1970 to 1975 Hoyer studied sculpture at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art . There the student met the Bulgarian Sneschana Russewa , who had started studying graphic design at the East Berlin art college and whom he married in 1976. After completing his studies with a diploma, he continued his traineeship there. In 1977 the freelance sculptor moved to Bulgaria . In 1980 he won a competition for a sculpture for the city of Balchik , the execution of the marble sculpture was in his hands. Three years later he came back to the GDR, where he began working as a coin designer. In the same year, Hoyer began teaching at the art college in Berlin-Weißensee.

Work in coin design

It wasn't until 1983 that the artist couple began to design commemorative coins . Since 1984, Hoyers and his wife have lived and worked near Ernst-Thälmann-Park in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg . Between 1983 and 1990, Heinz Hoyer designed 13 commemorative coins for the GDR , twelve of them together with Sneschana Russewa-Hoyer. In doing so, both became known as medalists in specialist circles in the GDR. With the German reunification this had to be rebuilt, as the artist couple Hoyer were quite unknown in the Federal Republic.

After successful design competitions, Hoyer's ideas and work were immortalized on several commemorative coins in the Federal Republic of Germany. This continuity in coin design has continued to this day. Thus three German currencies, the mark , D-mark and the euro are the subject of his work. This is the reason why Heinz Hoyer, together with his wife Sneschana Russewa-Hoyer, is one of the most successful coin designers in Germany.

Heinz Hoyer and Sneschana Russewa-Hoyer are members of the German Society for Medal Art and belong to the artist group of Berlin Medalists . Heinz Hoyer is also a member of the Fédération internationale de la médaille d'art (FIDEM, English International Art Medal Federation ).

Works

Thirteen designs by Hoyer were implemented on GDR commemorative coins , such as the 10- mark coins "Alfred Brehm" from 1984, "40 Years of the German Gymnastics and Sports Association" from 1988 and the 5-mark commemorative coin "Zeughaus Berlin".

In the period between 1990 and 2001, some of Hoyer's designs were also realized. An example of this is the DM 10 commemorative coin “300 Years of the Francke Foundations” from 1998.

Probably the most famous coin motif of the Hoyer couple is the stylized federal eagle on the reverse of the German 1 and 2 euro coins . Furthermore, Heinz Hoyer is the artist of the 2 Euro commemorative coin "Schleswig-Holstein" with the motif of the Holsten Gate in Lübeck from 2006. The Schwerin Castle , which adorns the 2 Euro commemorative coin from 2007, and the Cologne Cathedral , the Released in 2011, the design was implemented by Hoyer.

Heinz Hoyer also designed the sides of the four 10 euro silver commemorative coins and the 100 euro gold coin “ FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 ”. The motifs on the value side of the 100 and 200 Euro gold coins for the introduction of the Euro in 2002 also come from Hoyer.

Furthermore, some images of foreign coins, for example from Nauru and Vanuatu , come from the sculptor. In addition to the coins made in Germany, there are also a number of award-winning, but not minted coin images by Hoyer.
