Heinz Nittel (born October 29, 1930 in Klagenfurt , † May 1, 1981 in Vienna ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). The President of the Austrian-Israeli Society and co-founder of the Jewish Welcome Service Vienna was the victim of a terrorist murder.

Life

After joining the SPÖ early on , Nittel was elected chairman of the Socialist Youth in 1954 and held this position for ten years. In 1969/70 he was briefly a member of the Vienna State Parliament and a member of the Vienna City Council , from 1970–1976 he was a member of the National Council , before serving as a Vienna City Councilor from 1976 until his death . From 1979 he was entrusted with the management of the Road, Transport and Energy business group in the city senate. In this capacity, he opened the new building of the Vienna Reichsbrücke in November 1980 . In addition, the north bridge was extended and the underground network expanded during his tenure .

Heinz Nittel was murdered on May 1, 1981 by Iraqi born Hesham Mohammed Rajeh, 21, on behalf of Bahij Younis, a member of the terrorist Abu Nidal organization . The assassin had ambushed him in front of his home in Vienna- Hietzing . Nittel wanted to drive to the May march on Rathausplatz and was just getting into his car when the assassin's targeted shots killed him through the car window. On August 29, Rajeh and a second person carried out a terrorist attack on the city ​​temple , in which he was arrested. The client Bahij Younis was arrested and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in 1981 after three jury trials. In the spring of 1995, however, he was released early from prison.

The honor grave Heinz Nittel is located on the Zentralfriedhof in the group 14C, point 36 .

Furthermore, he was posthumously awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of the City of Vienna . The Heinz-Nittel-Hof , a large residential complex in the Großjedlersdorf district of Floridsdorf , was named after him, as was a path in Hietzing in 1991, the Heinz-Nittel-Weg . In 1991, on the tenth anniversary of his death, the then mayor Helmut Zilk unveiled a memorial plaque on the main tower of the Vienna City Hall . In his honor, the Jerusalem Foundation opened the Heinz Nittel Traffic Education Center in Jerusalem in 1983 , where children learn correct and safety-conscious behavior in traffic as pedestrians and cyclists through theoretical and practical lessons.
