Marriage certificate
The marriage certificate is Germany's evidence for the marriage ( § 54 para. 2, § 55 para. 1 no. 2 PStG ). Like the civil partnership certificate, it belongs to the civil status documents .
The personal status law reform act replaced the previous 1 January 2009 civil status by electronic civil register from. Since then, a marriage register has not been kept , but a marriage register from which marriage certificates are issued ( Section 3 (1) No. 1, Section 15 , Section 55 (1) No. 2, Section 57 PStG). The civil status law no longer recognizes the term marriage certificate .
In the area of application of the PStG of the GDR from December 4, 1981, the marriage certificate has been referred to as the marriage certificate since January 1, 1982.
Content of the marriage certificate
The marriage certificates are created and notarized by the registrar from the entries in the marriage register ( Section 55 Paragraph 1 No. 2, Paragraph 2 PStG).
In the marriage certificate according to Section 57 PStG added
- the first names and surnames of the spouses at the time of the marriage as well as the first names and surnames resulting from the entry in the register at the time the marriage certificate was issued,
- Place and date of birth of the spouses,
- Place and day of marriage ,
- the legal affiliation of a spouse to a religious community , provided the affiliation results from the entry in the register.
Marriage certificates are also issued from the family books , which are continued as marriage records ( Section 77 (3) PStG).
If the marriage is dissolved, the reason and time of the dissolution are given at the end of the marriage certificate.
The conversion of a civil partnership into a marriage also corresponds legally to a marriage within the meaning of § 14 PStG. In the case of a same-sex marriage and the conversion of a civil partnership into a marriage, the leading texts in the marriage certificate for the same-sex spouses must be neutralized (instead of "husband" and "wife", the leading text "spouses").

Since January 1, 2009, the fees for civil services have been regulated by state law ( Section 72 PStG).
