Princess Helene Friederike Auguste zu Waldeck and Pyrmont VA (born February 17, 1861 in Arolsen , † September 1, 1922 in Hinterriß , Tyrol ) was a German princess . By marriage, she became a member of the British royal family .

Life

Helene came from the Waldeck family . She was the fifth daughter of Prince Georg Viktor zu Waldeck and Pyrmont (1831-1893) and his first wife Princess Helene von Nassau (1831-1888), daughter of Duke Wilhelm I and his second wife Princess Pauline von Württemberg . Helene's sister Emma was Queen from 1879 and Regent of the Netherlands from 1890.

On April 27, 1882, Princess Helene married Prince Leopold of Great Britain and Ireland, 1st Duke of Albany (1853-1884), fourth and youngest son of British Queen Victoria and Prince Consort Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha at Windsor Castle . The short, happy marriage resulted in two children:

⚭ 1904 Prince Alexander von Teck (1874–1957), Governor General of Canada
⚭ 1905 Princess Viktoria Adelheid of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1885–1970)

Her husband died on March 28, 1884 on the French Côte d'Azur in Cannes , after a knee injury from falling from a horse, of complications from his hemophilia . He was buried at Windsor Castle . Four months after his death, their son Carl Eduard was born, who was the 2nd Duke of Albany since his birth. After the death of her husband, Helene continued to live with her two children in the Claremont House .

When her brother-in-law, Duke Alfred von Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha , died on July 30, 1900 without a male heir and his brother, Duke Arthur von Connaught , had renounced his successor because of his British army career, her son Carl Eduard was appointed as his successor.

Because of her later heart condition, the widow Helene spent a few weeks in Hinterriß , Austria , where she died on September 1, 1922. According to her instructions, she was buried in the place where she died, next to a memorial chapel built for her in 1922.
