Helke Sander (born January 31, 1937 in Berlin ) is a German feminist filmmaker and author .

Life

After graduating from high school in Remscheid , Helke Sander attended an acting school in Hamburg. After her marriage to the Finnish writer Markku Lahtela and the birth of her son Silvo (* 1959), she worked as a director at the Finnish workers' theater and for Finnish television. In 1965 Sander returned to Berlin.

From 1966 to 1969 she studied at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin and worked as a translator and reporter alongside her studies. In 1968 she and other women founded the Action Council for the Liberation of Women . As its representative, she gave a speech at the SDS delegates' conference on September 13, 1968. This was followed by the famous tomato toss, which is considered the prelude to the women's movement in the Federal Republic.

Together with Claudia von Alemann , she organized the first international women's film seminar, which took place in Berlin in 1973. In 1974 she founded the magazine Frauen und Film , the first feminist film magazine in Europe, which she published until 1981.

Sander's cinematic work is inextricably linked to her feminist commitment. A premium for Irene , for example , which was commissioned for WDR in 1971, addresses the conflict-ridden dual role of women in the workplace and in the private sphere. In 1972 she made the film Does the Pill Free? With Sarah Schumann . , which was followed by a further collaboration with men's associations in the following year . Her film The All-Round Reduced Personality - Redupers (1978) is one of the most important feminist films of the 1970s. The male lead in this film was played by Frank Burckner. The documentary BeFreier und Befreite (1992) about the rape committed by soldiers of the Red Army during the last weeks of the war and the first weeks after the war, which was sometimes controversial, received a lot of attention . In 1997 the feature film Dazlak - Skinhead was made , for which Helke Sander wrote the script together with her son Silvo.
