Helmut Kellershohn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helmut Kellershohn (* 1949 ) is a German historian and right-wing extremism researcher . He is a founding member and board member of the Duisburg Institute for Language and Social Research (DISS).

Life

Helmut Kellershohn studied history and Catholic theology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . According to his own statements, he was active as a student in the 1968 movement . Since 1976 he has been working in these subjects in the school service, from 1978 as a teacher, most recently senior teacher , at the Gymnasium in den Filder Benden , an independent advanced high school in Moers . He took early retirement in 2011 .

In 1987 he was one of the founders of the independent research institute Duisburg Institute for Linguistic and Social Research (DISS). Kellershohn works on the subjects of right-wing extremism , conservatism and ethnic nationalism . He is the author and editor of numerous works, his contributions have appeared a. a. in the in-house DISS-Journal and on the blog DISSkursiv , in anti-fascist papers such as Antifaschistische Nachrichten and Der Rechts Rand , in political magazines such as concrete (together with Anton Maegerle ) and in the circular from the “AG Right-Wing Extremism / Antifascism” on the PDS party executive , in the science magazine Forum Wissenschaft , in the national daily newspapers Junge Welt and the daily newspaper as well as in the yearbook of the archive of the German youth movement and in the journal for historical science .

In recent years he has given lectures and workshops on behalf of various educational and research institutions such as the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Rheinland-Pfalz (topic: media right-wing populism as the reproduction of racist resentment) and the research focus right-wing extremism / neo-Nazism at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences (topic: alternative for Germany / Young Conservatism) true. In addition, he was invited by the SPD parliamentary group as an expert to a hearing in the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg (topic: Young Freedom / Völkischer Nationalismus).

Kellershohn was repeatedly quoted as a right-wing extremism expert in national media such as Deutschlandradio Kultur , Westdeutscher Rundfunk and Handelsblatt . For example, he commented on the attacks on asylum seekers' homes in 2015 with: “The climate that Pegida, Legida and AfD created last year was deliberately exploited by extreme rights.” A “highly dangerous mixture” was created.

Kellershohn is a member of the working group on comparative dictatorship and extremism research in the German Association for Political Science (DVPW).

Kellershohn considers the so-called New Right to be a “broad current in the transition area between right-wing extremism and right-wing conservatism ”. Central to Kellershohn's research are his widely acclaimed studies on the Völkisch nationalism of the New Right, which he understands as a “synthesis of nationalism and racism ”. He counts the following seven points among its "core ideologues":

  • "The equation of people and nation , that is, the idea of a 'homogenized nation' according to nationalist racist criteria" ",
  • "The justification of a 'strong' state",
  • "The elevation of the people to a collective subject" (see Volksgemeinschaft ),
  • "The heroization of the national comrade , the 'decent German'",
  • "Conversely, the ethnic / racist construction of an internal enemy" (see scapegoat function , xenophobia ),
  • "A biopolitical understanding of the ' people 's body '" (see sexism ),
  • and “a chauvinistic power state thinking”.

The most important object of investigation by Kellersohn is the extreme right-wing (weekly) newspaper Junge Freiheit (JF). He keeps pointing u. a. in a recognized anthology on the JF on the recourse of the organ to the " Conservative Revolution " of the Weimar Republic and thus its anti-democratic list. In particular, it is about the young conservative direction. The milieu tries more to recapture concepts in terms of content than to adapt. The anthology Das Plagiat: Der völkische Nationalismus der Junge Freiheit (1994) was very detailed. So he brought the editorial environment of the JF in connection with the German Guilds (DG). He attests to the DG a "mixture of nationalistic sentiments, soldierly attitude and youthful urge to confess". He also placed them in a "gray area between the German national wing of the Union parties, the displaced parties (50s / 60s), the NPD (60s / 70s), the approaches to a 'fourth party" in the 70s and the right-wing conservative to right-wing extremists Party foundations in recent times. “The DISS joint venture Nation instead of Democracy: Being and Design of" Junge Freiheit " (2003; 2nd edition 2004) is regarded as a standard work in professional circles .

In addition, he worked out three options for right-wing extremism:

  • "Terrorist" (see militant neo-Nazism ),
  • "Metapolitical" (see networks of the new rights),
  • and "populist" about going to parliament.

As early as the 1980s, he was concerned with the right-wing party The Republicans, which is interwoven with the JF, in his own publications . In addition, in the course of a lawsuit concerning the proper monitoring of the party by the Lower Saxony Office for the Protection of the Constitution , he supported a linguistic report on their language and theory, prepared by the linguists Sonja Bredehöft and Franz Januschek . In it, the authors argued that the party's language had “aggressive-hostile behavior” and was directed against the Free Democratic Basic Order (FdGO).

He recently referred to the New Right's links with the Alternative for Germany party (AfD).

Reviews of his publications

In a literary report on right-wing extremism, published in the yearbook Extremism & Democracy from 1990, Eckhard Jesse summed up that Kellershohn said of the Republicans in his work The Volkish Nationalism of the Republicans. Ideology and Programmatics (1989) wanted to prove a “völkisch-nationalistic worldview”. An important point of reference is the “authoritarian state”. Kellershohn has gathered a number of “indications” for this.

Kellershohn's anthology Das Plagiat. The völkisch nationalism of the young freedom (1994) was u. a. reviewed in the Sociological Review ( Irmgard Pinn ) and in der Zeit ( Brigitta Huhnke ). In the opinion of Pinn, the authors at the Duisburg Institute for Linguistic and Social Research examined Junge Freiheit critically. They "entered the right-wing extremist swamp in order to scientifically illuminate the intellectual scene there, to track down the organizational networks and the review and citation cartels," said Huhnke. Only the topic of anti-feminism was “incompletely described” .

His volume, The ' German Voice ' of 'Junge Freiheit' , published in 2013, brings together contributions that were created over several years at the DISS. For the first time, the central organs of the new and extreme right will be examined comparatively. The political scientist Dirk Burmester found in his review for the portal for political science : “The volume leads deep into the ideological worlds of German right-wing extremism. It becomes clear where and why neo-Nazis differ from the New Right, from which intellectual traditions they argue and which strategies they choose. Since the latter in particular are sometimes difficult to reveal, the book is an important contribution to raising awareness and civic education. "

About the anthology Capitalism and / or Democracy? Contributions to the critique of "market-conforming" democratic relationships (2014) read on the portal for political science by the reviewer Clemens Reichhold: “Far from a moralizing critique of capitalism, the volume offers an analytically differentiated perspective on the social and political forms of crisis-ridden capitalist society. Discourses, spaces and structures in which hegemony is contested are analyzed. "
