Helmut Obst

Helmut Obst (born December 9, 1940 in Annaberg ) is a German religious scholar .

Career

Helmut Obst studied theology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg from 1959 to 1964 . He then worked there as a temporary assistant in the academic field of church history. During this time he prepared his doctorate (1967) and his habilitation for church and dogma history (1970).

From 1970 to 1978 he was a lecturer in denominational studies . In 1978 he was appointed university lecturer for ecumenics ( ecumenical theology and denominational studies), in 1987 he was appointed full professor for ecumenics and general history of religion and in 1992 he was appointed professor for ecumenics, denominational studies and religious studies in 1992 . In the course of the revolution of 1989 he played a key role in restoring a free university in Halle. From 1989 to 1990 he was the last director of the theology section and the first dean of the theological faculty in Halle . He retired on April 1, 2006.

From 1992 to 2003 he was a member of the board of directors of the Francke Foundations , including their director in 2002/03. From 2003 to 2018 he was chairman of the board of trustees of the Francke Foundations, and since 2018 he has been its honorary chairman.

Obst is married and has two children.
