Helmut Ostermeyer

Helmut Ostermeyer (* 1928 ; † June 5, 1984 ) was a Bielefeld judge and non-fiction author. In March 1979 he was involved in founding the SPV "The Greens" .

Professional career

Ostermeyer entered the judicial service in February 1957. From March 1965 he was chairman of the youth lay judge in Bielefeld. The publication of Ostermeyer's book criminal wrong led his superiors to a promotion freeze . Ostermeyer later moved from the youth court to the family court in Bielefeld. There he and his colleagues introduced hearings and discussions with the children of the families concerned for the first time in divorce proceedings in order to determine their interests. For some time Ostermeyer had a teaching position for criminal law and psychoanalysis at the University of Bielefeld .

Journalistic activity

Since 1967 Ostermeyer has published articles in the journal Vorgangs and authored a number of specialist books. He dealt critically with the German legal system and fundamentally questioned the imposition of penalties. Ostermeyer strove for a fundamental reform, where he wanted to include psychoanalysis and social sciences in judicial practice.

He also wrote the script for the episode "Halt - or I'll Shoot!" Broadcast on July 3, 1975 in the television series How Would You Decide ? . Also in 1975 he received the Fritz Bauer Prize of the Humanist Union. He was still able to finish his autobiography, which was published posthumously in 1985 under the title Sitz straight! appeared.

Party political engagement

On February 23, 1979, Ostermeyer, together with Detlev Freienseher, organized the first meeting of the Bunter List in Bielefeld, which moved into the local city council in the same year. In the 1979 election for the first European Parliament , Ostermeyer was a substitute candidate for Eva Quistorp in 8th place on the list of the other political association, Die Grünen .
