Helmut Pfotenhauer

Helmut Pfotenhauer (born August 3, 1946 in Nuremberg ) is a German specialist in German.

life and work

Pfotenhauer studied German, history, political science and sociology at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg . In 1974 he received his doctorate with Kurt Wölfel with a thesis on Walter Benjamin's late work . In 1982 he completed his habilitation with a treatise on Nietzsche's physiology of art. From 1974 to 1983 he was a research assistant in Erlangen, from 1983 Heisenberg scholarship from the German Research Foundation . After visiting professorships at the University of Vienna and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , in 1987 he was appointed to the chair for modern German literary history at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . He taught there until his retirement in 2010. Until 2014 he was a senior professor. From 1997 to 2007 he was President of the Jean Paul Society. Since 2006 he has been a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 2009 he was a visiting fellow at Trinity College (Cambridge) . His publications are devoted to literary anthropology, art literature, images in texts, biography and autobiography, edition philology, the works of Jean Paul (since 1994 editor of the historical-critical Jean Paul Edition).
