Helmut Schulte (born September 14, 1957 in Kirchveischede , Olpe district ) is a German football coach and sports manager .

Life

Schulte grew up in Kirchveischede, his birthplace in the Sauerland , where his parents had a farm. As a result of a job creation scheme , Schulte came to FC St. Pauli as a youth coach in 1984 in order to integrate foreign children into the next generation. He later became an assistant coach to the professional team.

After Willi Reimann left for local rival Hamburger SV , Schulte became head coach in his place in November 1987. In the same season he rose to the Bundesliga with FC St. Pauli. After the 1990/91 season had gone bad for FC St. Pauli, Schulte was dismissed in February 1991. For the following season 1991/92 he took over the coaching position at Bundesliga newcomer Dynamo Dresden . Although he had managed to stay in the league, Schulte resigned after only one season. He then worked for a short time as a co-commentator at Sat.1 before accepting an offer from FC Schalke 04 to succeed Udo Lattek in January 1993 . After a tenth place in the 1992/93 season and a bad start to the 1993/94 season, he was dismissed.

In the following years Schulte worked as a manager at VfB Lübeck and at FC St. Pauli. From 1998 to the end of February 2008 he was the sporting director in the youth division of FC Schalke 04. On March 1, 2008, he came to FC St. Pauli for the third time and took on the role of “Sports Manager”. His contract, which ran until February 2013, was terminated in May 2012 by mutual agreement. In February 2013 Schulte published the book Three St. Pauli Lives about his time in professional football and especially at St. Pauli .

The SK Rapid Wien committed Schulte 1 January 2013 as the new sporting director. There he used an exit clause to move to Fortuna Düsseldorf as sports director on January 1, 2014 . Towards the end of a 2014/15 season that was unsatisfactory for Fortuna Düsseldorf , he was released from his duties on May 11, 2015.

From February 1, 2016 to May 2018, Helmut Schulte was head of the licensed player department of the second division club 1. FC Union Berlin . After the 2017/18 season , which was disappointing for Union , the separation took place. Since September 2018 he has been the loan player at VfB Stuttgart .

Schulte met his wife Bettina during the promotion celebrations in 1988 at Hamburg Airport. He has been married to her since 1991.

On January 18, 2007, Schulte was seriously injured in Essen during the hurricane "Kyrill" by a falling beech tree . He suffered a fracture of the second cervical vertebra . The then 49-year-old Schulte was temporarily in mortal danger.

In the film Football is Our Life from 2000, he played himself in his role as the youth coordinator of FC Schalke 04.
