Helsinki City Transport (or Helsinki stads trafikverk ; Finnish and Swedish for "Operations of the City of Helsinki", official abbreviation HKL / HST ) is the name of the transport authority of the city of Helsinki . They are owned by the city. HKL has been part of the newly founded Helsingin seudun liikenne (HSL) regional association since the beginning of 2010 , which is now responsible for planning and coordinating local public transport in the Helsinki region . Since then, HKL has only operated as the operator of the Helsinki Metro , the Helsinki tram and (through a subsidiary) the ferry connections to the island of Suomenlinna . City bus transport in Helsinki was spun off in 2005.
history
From 1890 to 1944 local public transport in Helsinki was operated by the company Spårvägs- och Omnibus-Aktiebolaget i Helsingfors - Helsingin Raitiotie- ja Omnibus-Osakeyhtiö . The city bought the majority of the company's shares in 1913. In 1944 the corporation was converted into a municipal enterprise.
From 1949 to 1974, 1979 to 1985 HKL was the operator of the trolley bus -lines of Helsinki.
In December 2004 the bus department HKL-Bussiliikenne ("HKL-Busverkehr") was merged with the company Suomen Turistiauto Oy (" Finnische Reisebusgesellschaft AG"), which is also fully owned by the city . The name of the new, independent bus company has been Helsingin Bussiliikenne Oy ("Busverkehr Helsinki AG") since January 2005 .
The ferry traffic to Suomenlinna is carried out by the HKL subsidiary Suomenlinnan Liikenne Oy .
HKL has been part of the Helsingin seudun liikenne (HSL) regional association since January 1st, 2010 .
