Hendrik Snoek (born April 2, 1948 in Münster , Westphalia ) is a former German show jumper and managing director of the Ratio group of companies. He also gained notoriety through his kidnapping in November 1976.

Life

Youth and the beginning of a sporting career

Snoek grew up in an equestrian family. His father, Egbert Snoek, was, in addition to his professional activity as founder and partner of RATIO Handel GmbH, a horse breeder and, from 1980, president of the traditional Westphalian equestrian club in Münster. His sister Elke was married to FN President Breido Graf zu Rantzau .

Hendrik Snoek started vaulting at the age of six in Wolbeck and started riding at the age of nine. In 1968 he won the show jumping competition at the CHIO Aachen on his horse "Dorina" . In 1972 he won the Hickstead Derby on "Shirokko" before he became European champion in the team competition on "Rasputin" in Munich in 1975 . A year later he was reserve rider at the Summer Olympics in Montreal .

kidnapping

In the second half of 1976, the Federal Republic of Germany was marked by a series of kidnappings: the Gutberlet kidnapping began on October 8, followed by the Karlsberg heir Gernot Egolf (October 19), and the end was the kidnapping of Richard Oetker (14 . December).

On November 3, 1976, Hendrik Snoek was kidnapped from his apartment in Münster by two kidnappers, who demanded a ransom of DM 5,000,000 (adjusted for inflation, approx. 6,400,000 euros) from Snoek's parents  for his release, which Snoek's best friend Breido Graf had Rantzau near Frankfurt am Main. The kidnappers then hid him in a 52 m high cavity in a pillar of the Ambachtal Bridge near Herborn . On November 5, an employee of the city of Herborn accidentally discovered pieces of paper on a routine trip that Snoek threw out of an opening. The police, alerted then, found Snoek tied with a chain around his neck and freed him.

A short time later, the Münster district court sentenced one of the kidnappers involved to 13 years in prison.

Further career

Only a week after his kidnapping, he finished third in a horse show in Vienna. In 1977 Snoek became German champion in show jumping on "Gaylord". In 1984 he won the Grand Prix of the Dublin Horse Show on "Palma Nova". In 1989 he ended his career as a show jumper.

While his father was chairman of the supervisory board of Ratio GmbH & Co. KG from 1978 to 2003 (until April 11, 2013: Ratio Handel GmbH & Co. KG), Hendrik Snoek became the company's managing director.

In 1978 he was elected active spokesman in the DOKR jumping committee. From 1993 to 2005 he was head of the jumping committee. Also in 1993 he took over the presidency of the Westphalian Riding Club from his father and is thus the organizer of the tournament of the winners in front of the Münster castle. In 2005 he was awarded the German equestrian cross in gold. He was awarded the Sports Oscar at the 2007 Sports Ball by the Sports Association of the City of Münster.

Hendrik Snoek, like his father, runs the Gut Berl riding facility at the gates of Münster . Lars Nieberg is employed here as head of the estate, he succeeded Kurt Gravemeier in this position in March 2013 . Markus Merschformann , Toni Haßmann and Katrin Eckermann have already worked as trainers .
