Henri Boulad SJ (born August 28, 1931 in Alexandria , Egypt ) is an Egyptian Jesuit , mystic and author. In addition to his Egyptian and Lebanese citizenship , he has also had Hungarian citizenship since 2017 .

Life

Henri Boulad, son of an Italian-Syrian family, joined in 1950 the Congregation of the Jesuits and completed his two-year novitiate in Bikfaya in Lebanon. He then studied in France from 1952 to 1954 Literature in Laval and 1954-1957 Philosophy in Chantilly . He taught at the Jesuit College in Cairo for two years and studied Catholic theology in Lebanon from 1959 to 1963 . He received 1963 at the Melkite Rite , the priesthood . In 1965 he took part in an in-house training program of the Jesuits in Pomfret, Connecticut , and completed a doctorate in psychology at the University of Chicago .

He has been working in Egypt since 1967 . He was superior of the Jesuits of Alexandria, regional superior of the Jesuits of Egypt and professor of theology in Cairo. From 1984 to 1995 he was head of Caritas in Egypt and President of Caritas North Africa and the Middle East. From 1991 to 1995 he was Vice President of Caritas International for the Middle East and North Africa. In 2004 he became rector of the Jesuit College in Cairo.

With his letter SOS pour l'Église d'aujourd'hui (“SOS for the Church of Today”) to Pope Benedict XVI, written in 2007 . , which was published in 2009, he urged a rethink in the Catholic Church and advocated a theological and spiritual rethinking and deepening of the Church's proclamation combined with pastoral and catechetical reforms, which were to be voted on in a general synod of the universal church. In 2010 he stated that Europe "has lost its soul".

He acquired Hungarian citizenship in spring 2017. According to his own account, he wants to express his support for the restrictive refugee policy of Hungary under President Viktor Orbán in this way .

Boulad has published his numerous books in fourteen languages, including French, Arabic and German.
