Henri Antoine Marie Teissier (born July 21, 1929 in Lyon , France ) is retired Archbishop of Algiers .

Life

Henri Teissier comes from a family of Pieds-noirs who had lived in Philippeville since 1849 . Since his father was a career officer, he was born in continental France and grew up there in different places. He studied classical literature in Morocco, philosophy at the Sorbonne , theology at the Institut Catholique de Paris , Arabic language and literature at the École nationale des langues vivantes de Paris, Arabic studies at the Cairo University and the Aix University . He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Algiers on March 24, 1955 .

In 1966 he became director of the Center d'Etudes Diocésain (Diocesan Study Center) in Algiers. He had lived in Algeria since 1948 and became an Algerian citizen in 1966.

On November 30, 1972, Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the Bishop of Oran . The Archbishop of Algiers, Léon-Etienne Cardinal Duval, ordained him episcopal on February 3rd of the following year; Co -consecrators were Archbishop Sante Portalupi , Apostolic Nuncio in Algeria, and the Paderborn auxiliary bishop based in Magdeburg, Johannes Braun .

On December 20, 1980, he was appointed coadjutor archbishop in the Archdiocese of Algiers. With the resignation of Cardinal Duval on April 19, 1988, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Algiers.

Pope Benedict XVI accepted his age-related resignation on May 24, 2008.

Teissier was a member of the Secretariat for Relations with Non-Christians (1971), as Vice President of Caritas International for the Arab countries (1975-1987) he was involved in various Islamic-Christian symposia and the two Christian conferences for Palestine . Teissier was President of the Conference of Bishops of the North Africa Region from 1982 to 2004. He is regarded as an authoritative representative of the dialogue between Christianity and Islam , although between 1994 and 1996 19 Catholic priests were killed as a result of Islamist terrorist acts and the Trappist monks of Tibhirine were murdered in 1996 .

In 2000 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Institut Catholique de Paris for his ecumenical life's work . In 2008 he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor . Henri Teissier was on September 23, 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed member of the Second Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Africa (October 4 to 25, 2009).
