Henry Nicholas Ridley (born December 10, 1855 in West Harling Hall , Norfolk , England , † October 24, 1956 in Kew , Surrey , England) was a British botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Ridl. "

Life

Henry Nicholas Ridley graduated from Exeter College , Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1877 . He became a member of the Linnean Society of London in 1881 and a member of the Royal Society in 1907 . From 1880 to 1888 he was employed as a botanist at the British Museum . In 1887 he took part in a scientific expedition to the Fernando de Noronha archipelago .

Ridley went to Singapore in 1888 and was in charge of the Botanical Garden there until 1911 . He was also responsible for forest management and contributed to the development of rubber cultures on the Malay Peninsula.

He was particularly interested in the relationships between the flora and fauna. He visited Christmas Island and a stamp was dedicated to him. In 1950 he received the Linné Medal from the Linnean Society of London.
