Henry Tiller

Henry Tiller (born June 14, 1914 in Trondheim , † January 1, 1999 there ) was a Norwegian boxer . He was the winner of the silver medal at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin in the middleweight division (at that time up to 72.6 kg body weight).

Career

Amateur career

Henry Tiller started boxing in 1930 with the "Bokseklubben" Trondheim . He was very talented and quickly developed into a technically excellent boxer. In 1931 he was Norwegian junior lightweight champion (at that time up to 61.2 kg body weight). In the following years he grew into the middleweight division. In 1935 he won his first Norwegian championship title in the senior middleweight division, to which he added four more by 1940.

He made his debut at an international boxing event in 1934 on the occasion of an international match between Ireland and Norway in Dublin . Country fights between individual nations played a major role at the time, as they often offered the only comparison options among athletes from different nations. Large international championships were relatively rare in the 1930s. Other international boxing tournaments did not take place at all. In Dublin, Henry Tiller lost in his first international match against the Irish Laurence Flood on points.

In 1936 Henry Tiller was sent to the Olympic Games in Berlin . The Olympic boxing tournament was the first international boxing tournament in which he participated. He started in the middleweight division and won his first fight over Edward Peltz from South Africa on points. On points he also won in his next fights over Richard Shrimpton from Great Britain , Adolf Baumgarten from Germany and Henryk Chmielewski from Poland and had thus reached the final against Jean Despeaux from France . In an even fight, some of the better scenes Despeaux had in the final round decided in his favor. Henry Tiller lost just on points and therefore received the silver medal .

In 1937 Henry Tiller competed in the European Championships in Milan . There he won the middleweight division over Peter Horak from Austria and Anton Raadik from Estonia on points, but was defeated in the semifinals against Henryk Chmielewski, so that he did not reach the final. The fight for 3rd place, which was still being boxed out at that time, against the Italian Bruno Zorzenone, he could not contest due to injury and therefore had to be content with 4th place. On December 5, 1937, Henry Tiller succeeded in Oslo in an international match between Norway and Poland, also the revenge for the defeat at the European Championship against Henryk Chmielewski. He won this fight on points.

In 1938 Henry Tiller won the open English middleweight championship in London by defeating David Peck.

After that he did not fight any more international fights. As an amateur boxer, he had fought 158 ​​fights in his career, of which 22 lost, and once he boxed a draw.

Profile career

Henry Tiller's professional career was limited to four fights he won in 1941. It was insignificant compared to his amateur career.
