Career

In 1831, Henry Corbett and his parents moved to White Creek, Washington County , New York , where he attended public schools. In 1840 he was enrolled at Cambridge Academy in New York State. In the local city of Cambridge he also worked in commerce. In 1843 he moved to New York City , where he also worked in commerce until 1851. That year he traveled by ship to Portland in what would later become the state of Oregon. In his new home he soon achieved an enormous career advancement. He was successful in trading and soon got into various other industries. These included banking, finance and insurance, river shipping, carriage lines, railways, telegraph companies and the iron and steel industry. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He became a chamberlain and a member of the Portland City Council. He also became Republican President of State for Oregon.

In 1866, Henry Corbett was elected by the state legislature as his party's candidate to the US Senate, where he succeeded James W. Nesmith on March 4, 1867 . By March 3, 1873, he completed a six-year term there. As early as 1865, the work of Congress had been overshadowed by tensions between the Republican Party and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial against the president. During Corbett's tenure in the Senate, the 14th and 15th amendments were passed. After his term in office, Corbett renounced another candidacy. In the following years he continued his professional activities.

In 1897 there was no majority in the Oregon state legislature for the seat of the Class 3 category US Senator. Therefore, the governor named Corbett as acting US Senator. The Senate, however, rejected this approach and refused Corbett his seat. This was only refilled in 1898 by Joseph Simon . Three years later, in 1901, Corbett ran unsuccessfully to return to the Senate. He died in Portland on March 31, 1903.
