Herbert Ross

Herbert David Ross (born May 13, 1927 in Brooklyn , New York , † October 9, 2001 in New York City ) was an American choreographer and film director .

Life

Ross began his career as a dancer and choreographer, which particularly attracted him to film adaptations of musicals . He developed his first choreographies for films in the 1950s for films such as Carmen Jones by Otto Preminger . In the 1960s for Doctor Dolittle and Funny Girl with Barbra Streisand .

Herbert Ross was nominated once for an Oscar and won a Golden Globe as best director for the film Am Wendpunkt , which made film history mainly because it was the first film to win none of the eleven Academy Award nominations (2015 still a record, since 1985 together with Die Farbe Lila ).

Ross had been married to Jackie Kennedy’s younger sister, Lee Radziwill , since 1988 , who was herself an actress. The couple separated shortly before his death. He died of heart failure at the age of 74 .
