Herbert Strasser

Herbert Strässer (born July 9, 1930 in Lebach , Saarland ; † December 1, 2005 in Bücken ( County Hoya )) was a German sculptor .

Strässer's work is characterized by concentrated recognition and precise design of the essential. His powerful and at the same time finely designed, abstract sculptures consistently unfold essential human themes in space. His most famous work is the sculpture of the Golden Europe .

Life

Herbert Strässer attended the State School for Arts and Crafts in Saarbrücken from 1947 to 1952 , where he was a student of Hannes Neuner , and from 1952 to 1954 the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris . He then learned experimental photography from 1954 to 1955 with Otto Steinert in Saarbrücken.

In 1955 he started sculpting. In 1957 he took part in the Int'l Auschwitz competition. Between 1959 and 1966 Strässer worked as an art teacher. In addition, in 1962 he took part in the symposium of European sculptors in Berlin and in 1963 received a sponsorship from the Saarland Ministry of Culture. Between 1963 and 1967 Strässer won several prizes in competitions. From 1961 to 1971 he stayed in Berlin for study and work purposes. In 1971 he took part in the Munich Olympic competition.

In 1972 Strässer moved to Ludwigshafen am Rhein and in 1973 to Berlin. In 1990 he acquired the "Hoffmeyer-Schmiede" in Bücken, a historic two-column house from 1621, in which he lived and worked from then on.

The artist has created an extensive and varied work that includes reliefs, sculptures, terracottas, bronzes and steel structures. He chose his working materials from a wide variety of materials: plaster, wood, stone, steel, terracotta, bronze. Some works were created for interior and exterior design of public spaces and can be seen in some cities.
