Resort

Recreation Home Dr. Loewe, now operated as a restaurant

Herchen was already a popular summer retreat in the past. There is evidence of stays by the musician Engelbert Humperdinck , the writer Josef Winckler , who wrote Tollen Bomberg here, and the group from the Düsseldorfer Malkastens . These included the painter brothers Oswald and Andreas Achenbach and Johannes Deiker , but also musicians and poets such as Edmund Henoumont.

From the mid-1880s to 1900, the group of artists organized the so-called Sedan Games here on September 2nd . These plays with Bengali fire and sets floating on the Sieg were soon so famous that the railroad used special trains on match days.

Later some buildings were built in Herchen for the spa stay, but they were not very successful, for example the Herchener Hof and the Löwenburg.

Herchen has been a state-approved resort since 1986 .

Awards

In the state competition Our village should become more beautiful , Herchen won bronze in 1983, silver in 1985 and bronze in 1990 as the most beautiful village in the Rhein-Sieg district . In 2006, the special initiative of women for the development of the village received a special prize in the state competition Our village has a future ; Herchen became a silver village.

Transport links

Herchen can be reached via Landesstraße 333 and Landesstraße 312. There is also a connection to the Victory Line in the outlying district of Herchen-Bahnhof . The trains S12 (from Au to Cologne-Ehrenfeld ) and the S19 every hour (from Herchen to Düren ) and the Rhein-Sieg-Express RE9 (from Aachen to Siegen ) run here every hour .

schools

In Herchen there is, in addition to a primary school, one of the few private schools in Germany, the Bodelschwingh-Gymnasium , which is owned by the Protestant Church ; it is still called Päda in the village (derived from the earlier name “Pädagogium”). In the neighboring town of Herchen-Bahnhof there was a secondary school from 1966 to 2013 , which was provisionally maintained in Herchen as early as 1963 and was converted into the location of the comprehensive school in Windeck from grade 8 in 2014.

There is also a kindergarten in Herchen.

Attractions

The Thingplatz on a mountain spur above the village

In addition to the old Catholic Church of St. Peter , the Thingplatz with the Cologne cannons below is steeped in history. The Protestant church was built in 1879 and 1885 (tower). Exhibitions and presentations take place in the guest house, the sculpture park behind it merges into the Löwenburg complex, where mini golf and pedal boat rentals are offered. The platform of the former Hindenburg monument offers a beautiful view over the Siegtal . Outside is the healing fountain with a legend .

Cologne cannons

Cologne cannon in Herchen

The two Cologne cannons are Prussian C / 61 guns of the fortress artillery manufactured in Liège . The design, with the iron trestles and the straightening machine placed on the carriage walls, suggests that the two 12-speed 12-pounders with Warendorff's piston lock were used to defend the fortress, according to tradition in Cologne. This construction enabled a greater firing range through drawn pipes, which allowed shooting over parapets with the greatest possible cover.

By the highest cabinet order of February 18, 1858, issued by the then Prince Regent and later Kaiser Wilhelm I, the first three rifled breech-loading guns were introduced into the Prussian artillery. These were initially the iron 12-pounder and the iron 24-pounder. With the introduction of these cannons, designated as C / 61, the Prussian artillery switched from conventional muzzle-loading cannons with smooth barrels to modern breech-loading guns with rifled barrels. The round ball used at the time could no longer meet the requirements of rifled gun barrels and stronger propellants and was replaced by the long bullet, then known as the lead shirt grenade .

Events

A carousel of the small Herchen village fair

In Herchen there is a carnival parade (always on Carnival Sunday) and a small fair in August. There is also a children's party in the spa park on the last Sunday before the summer holidays. During the car-free Siegtal (the Siegtalstrasse is closed to cars on the first Sunday in July), there are also numerous food stands in Herchen. Traditionally, after the Whitsun singing, the pancake festival is celebrated in the spa gardens.

Sports

The place has a main sports field on the Sieg side of the Bergisches Land and a newer training field in Übersehn , both of which are grass fields. They are used by the gymnastics and sports club Herchen 1922 eV The first men's soccer team in town has been playing in the district league B3 / Sieg / Mittelrhein since the 2018/2019 season. Other sports are volleyball, swimming (hall of the Bodelschwingh Gymnasium), senior sports, tennis and ladies' gymnastics.

For several years , the former second division volleyball team TSV Germania Windeck played its home games in the sports hall of the Bodelschwingh Gymnasium . The club's second men's team (regional league) still plays its home games in the Herchen secondary school.

A miniature golf course and a billiard table are located near the Sieg next to the “Löwenburg”. If the weather permits, it is also possible to rent pedal boats and paddle boats.

Herchen is also recommended for hikers, as a whole stretch of Natursteig Sieg leads around the village: on the fifth stage - coming from Eitorf - a detour to the village is worthwhile, the sixth stage ends in Herchen at the former Hindenburg monument. Cyclists also get their money's worth, as the Siegweg leads directly past the village, so that excursions along the Sieg are worthwhile from there.
