Hergenrath is a village in the north of the German-speaking Community of Belgium , which belongs to the municipality of Kelmis . As of December 31, 2013, 2694 people lived in Hergenrath.
geography
Hergenrath is located southeast of the villages Kelmis and Neu-Moresnet, which also belong to the municipality of Kelmis, and borders the German city of Aachen in the north .
history
The earliest known mention of Hergenrath can be found in a document from the Aachen jury dated March 22, 1280, which speaks of an estate at 'Heyenroth'. At the time, this estate owed the de Roza family in Aachen an annual rye levy. Also at this time the noble families 'von Eyneberg' (named after the Eyneburg ) and 'von Hergenrath' existed in the area. Today's Hergenrath parish church St. Martin was built between 1843 and 1846.

In addition to the standard German taught in school and used in the community , the population speaks the regional Platdiets , a Limburg dialect.
Culture and sights
Hammer bridge
The Hammerbrücke is a railway bridge built in its original form between 1841 and 1843 over the Göhl valley between Hergenrath and Hauset . It is part of the Liège – Aachen railway line . The bridge was blown up in 1940/44, the ruins were supplemented by a temporary solution and only replaced by a new building in 1999.
Eyneburg
A special attraction is the Eyneburg , which originated in the High Middle Ages.
Flower parade / festival of flowers
Hergenrath gains national tourist importance every two years with its flower parade, a parade with flower-decorated carriages that rolled through the streets of the village for the first time in 1955 and attracted up to 20,000 visitors during its weddings. The Flower Parade has been part of the Flower Festival since 2014 , a multi-day event that includes numerous other program items such as concerts and shows.

Club life
The pronounced club life of the village takes place primarily in the cultural center next to the church. The Kgl. Harmonie Hergenrath , which is known nationwide as an "ensemble with special artistic distinction" recognized by the German-speaking community.
The soccer club 1. FC Hergenrath plays in the 2nd division of the EAFV (Eupener Amateur Soccer Association). The club was founded in 1980, the jerseys are black-green-white.
traffic
Hergenrath is connected to the NMBS / SNCB rail network with a stop on the Liège – Aachen railway line . The station, which was closed from 1988 to 2007, is located between the Hammerbrücke and the German border . It is served by the L 09 (in Germany RE 29) between Aachen Hauptbahnhof and Spa-Géronstère in regional traffic. This euregioAIXpress previously served the Spa station .
Hergenrath is also on the TEC bus route 396, which connects Eupen and Vaals in the Netherlands .
