Herman Walder

Herman L. Walder (born April 2, 1905 in Dallas ; † October 17, 1991 ) was an American musician of Kansas City Jazz and Rhythm & Blues ( clarinet , alto saxophone , composition).

Walder originally played the trumpet and was a member of Jerry Westbrook's orchestra, but switched to woodwind due to an accident. He went on tour with Benny Moten . He then worked with Laura Rucker, Terrence Holder , George E. Lee , the Thamon Hayes Band, and Harlan Leonard's Kansas City Rockets . He then founded the band Swing Unit with his brother Woody Walder (1902–1978) in the mid-1930s , in which his school friend Pete Johnson also played and which lasted more than ten years. He was also active as a musician and in the union at the local level in Kansas City for the next several decades. Walder composed A Mellow Bit of Rhythm with Mary Lou Williams .
