Herman te Velde

Herman te Velde (born October 3, 1932 in Colmschate ; † May 26, 2019 in Eelde ) was a Dutch Egyptologist .

Life

He initially studied theology at the University of Groningen , but soon became interested in the history of religion and especially studied the religion of ancient Egypt with Theo van Baaren . He continued his studies with Helmuth Jacobsohn in Marburg . In 1967 he defended his doctoral thesis on the deity Seth .

In 1970 he became head of the newly founded Institute for Egyptology at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Groningen , but continued to teach Egyptian religion at the Theological Faculty. He took part in field research in Egypt and in missions of the Institut français d'archéologie orientale in the Temple of Montu, the University of Pennsylvania in Dra Abu'l Naga and the Brooklyn Museum in the Temple of Courage. His research focused on the Egyptian religion. He retired in 1997.
