Hermann Gieseler

Hermann Gieseler (born May 23, 1889 in Aschersleben , † August 25, 1948 in Magdeburg ) was a German trade union official.

Life

Gieseler was born the son of a bricklayer and learned the trade of glazier . At the age of 14 he was already involved in the workers' sports movement . In 1908 he joined the woodworkers' union and in 1909 the SPD . From 1914 to 1916 he took part in the First World War as a German soldier .

After retiring from military service in 1916, he found a job as a lathe operator and milling cutter at Hans Grade Motorenwerke Magdeburg. In the same year Gieseler became a member of the German Metal Workers Association (DMV). He was elected shop steward , works council chairman and member of the board of the Magdeburg branch of the DMV. In 1921 he was elected as auditor at the 15th general assembly of the association . From 1922 to 1925 he was chairman of the gymnastics and sports club “Fichte” in Magdeburg-Sudenburg, which was part of the workers' sports movement . In 1926 Gieseler left the Grade Works and worked for the Magdeburg city administration until 1945. In the time of National Socialism he was illegally involved in the workers' sports movement.

After the end of the Second World War , Gieseler was a member of the SPD city district group Magdeburg-Friedrichstadt and was early involved in rebuilding the unions in Magdeburg. He became chairman of the IG public companies and in October 1946 also chairman of the Magdeburg district association of the FDGB .

On August 25, 1948, Gieseler had a fatal accident while transporting building materials for the reconstruction of the Magdeburg trade union building on Ratswaageplatz, which had been destroyed in the war, and was buried in his native town of Aschersleben .

Honors

The city of Magdeburg named a street ( Hermann-Gieseler-Straße ) and a large sports hall in his honor . After the end of the GDR , the street was given its original name (Straße Am Fort ). The Hermann-Gieseler-Halle , however, still bears his name. A meanwhile demolished hotel in Schierke was an FDGB holiday home named after him in GDR times.
