Hermann Joseph Schmitz (born May 16, 1841 in Cologne ; † August 21, 1899 there ) was auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Cologne .

Life

Born in Cologne, he attended the Marcell high school there . After graduating from high school, Schmitz studied Catholic theology in Bonn in 1860/61 and from 1861 to 1865 at the University of Innsbruck , where he graduated with a doctorate in theology . After he was ordained a priest on April 7, 1866 in Innsbruck , he continued the studies of canon law from 1866 to 1868 at the Sapientia University in Rome , which he received in 1867 with the Dr. jur. can. completed. Here in Rome he lived in the college of the anima . Returned to his home diocese of Cologne in 1868, he was a parish administrator in Heimbach for a short time and in the same year became chaplain to St. Andreas in Düsseldorf . In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he was a chaplain and then worked again as a chaplain in Düsseldorf. The speaker at numerous Catholic days was in 1878 a co-founder of the Augustinus Association for the Catholic press and in 1886 became pastor at St. Dionysius in Krefeld . Archbishop Philippus Krementz appointed Schmitz to the cathedral capital in Cologne in 1893 and the Pope appointed him titular bishop of Zela and auxiliary bishop in Cologne on March 28, 1893 . On November 30, 1893, Bishop Paul Leopold Haffner of Mainz donated him episcopal ordination in Cologne . In addition, he was appointed official of the Archdiocese of Cologne in 1895 .

Schmitz was a versatile man and theologically educated. He was considered determined and ambitious and in 1899 was one of those candidates for the replacement of the Archdiocese of Cologne who were less acceptable to the government.
