Hermann Victor Andreae
Hermann Victor Andreae (born June 9, 1817 in Frankfurt am Main ; † September 8, 1889 there ; also Hermann Victor Andreä ) was a German Protestant theologian , doctor , philosopher , lawyer and linguist .
origin
Andreae was the son of the businessman Johann Carl Andreae (1789–1843) and Maria Sofia geb. Bansa (1798-1854). The family originally came from Strasbourg and had been based in Frankfurt since 1653. A direct relationship to the Württemberg theologians Jacob Andreae and Johann Valentin Andreae , as assumed by Andreae, cannot be proven.
Life
Although Andreae wanted to devote himself to theology, he wrote his father that law to study. From autumn 1837 he studied at the University of Göttingen . At Easter 1838 he continued his studies at the University of Berlin and in the fall of 1838 he went to the University of Bonn . In the spring of 1840 he received his doctorate in law. From 1841 he worked as a lawyer in his hometown of Frankfurt , but also edited theological writings on the side.
From Easter 1850 Andreae studied medicine at the University of Bonn and continued it from autumn 1851 at the University of Heidelberg , where he received his doctorate in medicine. In 1852 Andreae opened a medical practice in Frankfurt and specialized in homeopathy and the psychological aspects of therapy. The families of various Bundestag envoys were among his patients .
In later years he concentrated more on his theological and linguistic studies. In 1869 the University of Marburg awarded him the degree of theological licentiate . He also studied the Chinese language . In 1870 he handed over his practice to his son-in-law Caspar Simrock and devoted himself entirely to his interest in the prophet Isaiah as well as the study of theology and linguistics , which had existed since his youth . In 1870 the University of Strasbourg awarded him an honorary doctorate in philosophy . Victor Andreae died in Frankfurt on September 8, 1889. His grave is in the Frankfurt Südfriedhof .
Andreae understood Latin , Greek , French , Italian , English and Chinese as well as Hebrew . The latter language enabled him to talk to rabbis from Frankfurt. In 1864 he edited the Bibliotheca sinologica with John Geiger .
Andreae received recognition primarily for his works on Job , Isaiah and the Acts of the Apostles .
