Herntrop

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Herntrop is a deserted place near Grafschaft monastery in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The Flur Aufm Herntrop , about 800 to 1000 meters from the monastery, roughly describes the place where the place was in the High Middle Ages.

Different spellings have come down to us, 1072 as Hathincdorf , 1125 and 1228 as Hermincthorp , 1284 and 1292 as Herentorp and 1296 as Heringtorp . The place included two farms, one of which came in 1292 through the transfer of the owners Craft and Widekind from the county to the monastery. 24 acres of arable land, which went to the Schmallenberg citizens, were excluded from this transfer. From this it can be concluded that the farm had already fallen in desolation at this time. The eastern half of the district was added to the monastery property and smaller areas were given to Grafschafter farmers and Schmallenberg citizens.

Like many other places, the place fell victim to the great desolation process in the late Middle Ages . It must have been a creeping, slow process. This began around 1300. The downfall of this urban settlement is probably connected with the development of the urban center of Schmallenberg. Another reason was plague epidemics and the need of the residents to seek refuge in the city.
