history

The Heralds of the Gospel were founded by João Scognamiglio Clá Dias and were recognized as an international community under papal law by Pope John Paul II on February 22, 2001 . The heralds are classified as a spiritual community . The forerunner was a group from Brazil, “ Tradition, Family and Property” .

The community has offices in 57 countries. Since 2003 the Roman Church of San Benedetto in Piscinula has been entrusted to the Heralds of the Gospel. In Germany the heralds were active in the diocese of Regensburg for a short time.

Evangelization

Their charism is the new evangelization , particularly closely aligned with the instructions of Rome and the Popes. This includes B. the spread of the custom of the Wandering Madonna. Her spirituality is closely linked to the private revelation of Fatima , so that mostly a Fatima Mother of God is used as the Wandering Madonna. In various countries the heralds run schools, do popular missions and also have radio and television stations, for example in Brazil.

Two societies of apostolic life were established within the Heralds, the Societas Clericalis Vitae Apostolicae Iuris Pontificii Virgo Flos Carmeli as the male branch and the Societas Vitae Apostolicae Iuris Pontificii Regina Virginum (Queen of Virgins) as the female branch.

spirituality

The spirituality and attitude of the heralds rests on three pillars: the love of the Holy Eucharist , the veneration of the Virgin Mary and the fidelity to the Pope .

music

Due to its Brazilian origin, music plays a major role in the life and apostolate of the heralds, which is particularly used in the context of evangelization. Both chorale and instrumental music is used. A large choir was founded in São Paulo. a. the evangelistic efforts also started.

Criticism, apostolic visitation and provisional leadership

Members who resigned from the community reported abuse of power, coercion of conscience, irregular exorcism , fundraising without the permission of the local bishop, excessive devotion to the person of the founder, and possible cases of sexual violence.

This was followed by an apostolic visitation from June 2017 . On September 25, 2019, Pope Francis appointed Cardinal Raymundo Damasceno Assis as acting head of the Societas Clericalis Vitae Apostolicae Iuris Pontificii Virgo Flos Carmeli and the Societas Vitae Apostolicae Iuris Pontificii Regina Virginum . He is assisted by José Aparecido Gonçalves de Almeida , Auxiliary Bishop in Brasília , and by Sister Márian Ambrósio, Superior General of the Sisters of Providence . The manual of the Consuetudines ("Customs") of the Heralds, which imposes rigid norms of behavior on the members , should also be examined .
