secularized Sacred Heart Chapel

The secularized Herz-Jesu-Kapelle in Parkstrasse 37 and 39 in Berlin-Pankow was built around 1790 as a garden house. After it was acquired by the Roman Catholic Church , it was converted into a chapel . The building has been empty since 1990. A demolition could be prevented. Today it is used for residential purposes again.

history

In 1896 the pastor of the mother parish of St. Marien in Reinickendorf acquired the property with the garden house and had it converted into a chapel, which was consecrated in 1897. It was consecrated to Saint George . It was only later that it was named the Sacred Heart Chapel. The community already numbered 1,000 souls. The St. Georg Association asked Prince-Bishop Georg von Kopp von Breslau for his own clergyman for Pankow, who took office in 1901.

The chapel has been empty since 1990. It should give way to a new building. The fate of the little church in Parkstrasse had brought together artists and residents under the leadership of the painter and graphic artist Manfred Butzmann in a citizens' initiative to save the Sacred Heart Chapel. The action had made so much wind that the district and church refrained from the idea of demolition. The building was placed under monument protection. On December 3, 2004, the Sacred Heart Chapel was sold for residential use.

Building description

The starting point was an ice cellar near the Panke , overbuilt with a baroque pavilion . The building complex was part of the park of Schönhausen Palace . He stood on a small hill , the last remnants of the Slavic ramparts of Pankow. This building complex was expanded into a country house at the beginning of the 19th century . This structural change was due to the whim of the then royal widow Elisabeth Christine . After it was converted into a neo-Gothic chapel, it received a few side rooms.
