Hierocles (charioteer)
Hierocles († 222 in Rome ) was a slave and lover of the Roman emperor Elagabal .
He came from Caria and attracted the emperor's attention as a charioteer in the Circus Maximus . After Cassius Dio , Elagabal wanted to raise the Hierocles to Caesar and heir to the throne, but failed because of the resistance of his grandmother Julia Maesa , who pushed through her candidate Severus Alexander . Hierocles was murdered together with other courtiers in 222 when the emperor was overthrown.
