content

The film is primarily about the Battle of the Java Sea in Southeast Asia between Japanese and Allied naval units that took place in World War II during the Pacific War in February 1942. American , British , Dutch and Australian ships were involved on the Allied side (ABDA fleet). The Japanese emerged victorious from the naval battle. Almost the entire Allied fleet was damaged, sunk or had to withdraw. As a result, the Japanese occupied Java and thus had access to the island's mineral resources.

At the beginning of the film a voice rises and asks the question: Why is the Dutch East Indies so important to the modern world? The answer lies in the island's central importance as the economic center of the Dutch East Indies with the capital Batavia . Natural resources such as sulfur from volcanic rock, ores and fertile soil for growing rice, tobacco, maize, cinchona bark and palm oil were important resources . The strategically important location with its proximity to Australia was also important.

Background and production

In 1943, 25 documentaries were nominated for an Oscar by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , four of which received the coveted award. 1943 was a special year for documentaries. Most of these films were war documentaries that had been commissioned by the respective governments of the allied armed forces. Also high stakes in the East , who on behalf of the Dutch government in exile was established, falls into this category.

Most of the recordings were made in Indonesia . The production company was the Netherlands Information Bureau , and film material was also made available by the Dutch Audiovisual Archive in The Hague . Parts of the film were lost.

Digitization and remastering

High Stakes is the only 16mm film from Treasures in this edition. In addition to a black and white version, Sound and Vision also had a color version in the collection. The atmosphere of the film lies in the use of a soft focus with high contrast, which posed additional challenges for the restorers, which did not make making color corrections easier. Stains and minor damage that have been caused by the ravages of time have been made largely invisible during the restoration.

Award

The film was in 1943 in the category "Best Documentary" for an Oscar nomination, but the movies had to Midway , Kokoda Front Line! , Moscow Strikes Back and Prelude to War Defeated.
