High Street Kensington is an underground, partially open top London Underground station in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 1 on Kensington High Street. This is where the Circle Line and District Line trains stop . In 2014, 13.78 million passengers used the station. Kensington Palace is about 400 meters to the northeast .

The station has four tracks. The Circle Line and District Line trains on the Edgware Road - Wimbledon route operate on the two eastern platforms . The two western ones are butt tracks and serve as the terminus of a commuter train of the District Line, which runs to Earl's Court and temporarily to Kensington (Olympia) .

On October 1, 1868, the Metropolitan Railway (predecessor of the Metropolitan Line ) opened the Kensington (High Street) station , as part of the Paddington - Gloucester Road route . The Metropolitan District Railway (today's District Line) took the connecting curve to Earl's Court station into operation on July 3, 1871. In 1880 the station name was changed to High Street Kensington . Since 1949, the Circle Line has been considered a separate line, while the Metropolitan Line has been withdrawn.
