Archduchess Hildegard born Princess of Bavaria

Hildegard was a daughter of King Ludwig I of Bavaria and Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen . Princess Hildegard Luise Charlotte Theresia Friederike von Bayern (born June 10, 1825 in Würzburg , † April 2, 1864 in Vienna ) was an Austrian archduchess. Her first name was actually Hildegarde, but after her wedding she was officially called Hildegard in the family circle.

Life

Allerheiligen-Hofkirche in Munich, 1838

At the age of 19 she married Archduke Albrecht of Austria on May 1st, 1844 in the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche in Munich . In his diary, the later Emperor Franz Joseph I described her in an entry of May 24, 1844 as follows: “ I liked her a lot, she is pretty, has thick cheeks, a very pretty figure, is quite aimable, but has, think I, just too much of the Empress mother, especially the long, rigid gaze. "

After the birth of her second daughter Mathilde Marie and the previous complicated births, Hildegard was no longer able to have any more children despite numerous subsequent spa stays. Since her husband Archduke Albrecht thus remained without a male heir, he adopted his nephew Archduke Friedrich . After Albrecht's death, he inherited his property and property.

Hildegard of Bavaria was a cousin of Empress Elisabeth and was one of her confidants. She was a nun of the Sternkreuz - and the royal Bavarian Theresa Order and patron of several charitable associations and was buried in the Capuchin Crypt in Vienna. Her heart was buried separately and is in the Loreto Chapel of the Augustinian Church in Vienna .
