Hirtshals [ hiʀdshalʔs ] is a Danish port city in northeast Jutland , which has been part of Hjørring Municipality since the 2007 municipal reform . The 88 km² city has a population of 5733 (as of January 1, 2020). Two of the most important branches of the economy are tourism and trade around the Hirtshals port .

From 1970 to 2006 the city was the main town of the municipality of Hirtshals .

etymology

In the 16th century, the name Hartzhals (Hirschhals) was recorded on Dutch nautical charts , as seafarers believed they could see a resemblance to the neck of a deer in the ridge on which the lighthouse was later built. After the lighthouse was built in 1863, the name Hirtshals replaced the previous name of the fishing village, Lilleheden , which was named after a nearby farm.

Hirtshals is the end point of the Hjørring – Hirtshals railway line . As of 2018, the passenger trains between Hjørring and Hirtshals run every half hour (hourly during off-peak times) with a travel time of 22 minutes.

The fishing port is the second largest in Denmark with 200 registered fishing vessels; around 90% of the fish landed here is exported. The port is also important as a traffic port, including ferry connections to Norway ( Color Line and Fjord Line ) as well as to the Faroe Islands and Iceland with the Smyril Line . The Hirtshals - Kristiansand connection is one of the most important ferry connections to the Scandinavian Peninsula .

Directly above the harbor is a double flight of stairs (1997) designed by the painter and graphic artist Dorte Dahlin and the sculptor Mogens Møller . On the lookout between the stairs is a granite sculpture and a colorful glass mosaic.

tourism

On Kystvejen above the steep bank is a campsite that is not only popular because of the sea view, but is also used as a stopover for campers on the way to or from Norway.

Attractions

The city is the location of the North Sea Oceanarium maritime museum , which includes the largest seawater aquarium in Europe. The aquarium was destroyed in a fire on December 16, 2003, and a rarely kept sunfish perished. The oceanarium was reopened on July 22, 2005; two new sunfish populate the marine aquarium again.

The Hirtshals lighthouse designed by Niels Sigfred Nebelong (architect of Viborg Cathedral ) was built in 1863. It is similar to the Skagen lighthouse by the same architect. The building has 144 steps and a light height of 57 meters. A white light with a powerful flashing signal is emitted every 30 seconds. The tower offers a wide view of the city and its surroundings with the Tannis Bay to the east and Rubjerg Knude to the south.

The bunkers of the Atlantic Wall that have been preserved underneath the lighthouse have been a listed building since 1997 and are open to the public as Hirtshal's 10th Battery Bunker Museum . The extensive trenches and gun emplacements can be viewed free of charge and around the clock. An exhibition was installed in bunker 2. In 1942/43 the Wehrmacht had the concrete structures built at Danish expense. At the end of the war, the Danish army took them over , which is why they are relatively well preserved.

Another attraction is the Dysse of Tornby , seven kilometers to the south , the northernmost dolmen in the country.
