The Hispaniola barn owl ( Tyto glaucops ) is a species from the genus of barn owls that occurs only on Île de la Tortue and in the eastern part of Haiti in the Greater Antilles . It has long been considered a subspecies of the barn owl , but is viewed as an independent species in more recent literature. Their range overlaps with that of the American barn owl . However, there is no hybridization with this species. This and the fact that the sound repertoire differs from that of the American barn owl has led to its classification as a species.

features

The Hispaniola barn owl is a medium-sized species of barn owl. The body length is 33 centimeters. It is very similar to the barn owl that also occurs in Central Europe , but has an ash-gray face veil with an orange-brown wreath. This ash gray face veil is unique among barn owls. The body plumage is yellowish-brown with black spots on the upper side of the body. On the underside of the body, the spots have a slight longitudinal shape. The species is smaller than the America barn owl and lighter than the Curaçao barn owl .

In its area of distribution, it occurs predominantly in open terrain that has few trees and shrubs. It also inhabits open forests and is common near human settlements. The food spectrum includes small mammals such as mice and rats, as well as small birds, reptiles, frogs and insects. Nothing is known about reproductive biology. This is probably similar to that of other barn owls. Since the species was previously considered a subspecies of the barn owl, reliable population numbers are missing.
