History ( English : here in the sense of the past ) is a song by the northern English rock band The Verve and was released as a single by the record company after their first separation in August 1995 . The song was released as an EP , pressed in two different versions and released on September 18, 1995 for the market . It is also one of the twelve songs on the 1995 album by the band A Northern Soul .

The song History is a soft Britpop - anthem in the style of the great songwriter - ballads with which The Verve two years later managed the worldwide breakthrough of the last great heroes of the Britpop-phase 1990 were. History is marked by a heroic bearing strings - Arrangement , the strong warm voice of Richard Ashcroft and a lyric - romantic text. The four members of the band are considered the spiritual fathers of the song.

With the label "All Farewells Should Be Sudden" on the cover picture of the EP , History became The Verve's farewell single. The band had their picture taken in Times Square for the cover . The quote referred to partnership relationships in the narrower sense, but became an omen for the band that split after the singer's departure in August 1995.

Text and video

In terms of structure and content, the text is based on the poem London by William Blake - an English poet from the 18th century - and allegedly deals with Richard Ashcroft's separation from his long-term girlfriend a year earlier.

The video clip for the song was produced by Richard Ashcroft. To do this, he took the band's old videos and collaged a new clip from the individual scenes.
