Berlin is a world renowned university location and has a high concentration of science and research facilities . In the city, around 187,000 students (+ 3.8% compared to the previous year) study at a total of four universities , four art colleges , seven technical colleges and 24 state-recognized private universities , around 18 percent of whom come from abroad. Almost 50,000 people are employed at Berlin's universities (as of 2017).

Over 50,000 employees teach, research and work at over 70 non-university publicly funded research institutions in Berlin. The large national research organizations, some of which are funded by public funds, the Fraunhofer Society , the Helmholtz Association , the Leibniz Association and the Max Planck Society are also represented by several institutes, as are various federal ministries with a total of eight research institutes.
