Hofstetter Kurt

Hofstetter Kurt , also Kurt Hofstetter (born July 16, 1959 in Linz ), is an Austrian artist and composer. He lives and works in Vienna.

Artistic focus: concepts, computer, light and internet works, media art installations in public spaces, acousmatic music and sound works, experimental videos in collaboration with Barbara Doser (Parallel Media), prints, sculptures, irrational patterns.

Since 2002 he has published scientific publications in the field of geometry.

life and work

Concentrating on studying the music of the 1960s with Gary Danner led to an interest in composing music. In 1976 he wrote his first loop composition for two guitars, "Allee". At the same time he began to deal with abstraction in art and his fascination for theoretical mathematics, especially in dealing with infinity - surreal works (drawings, collages, ...).

The study of mathematics at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Innsbruck from 1978 to 1984 initiated his artistic engagement with projections of theoretical objects of virtual spaces (manifolds) into everyday reality and led to surreal photocopies and sculptures (e.g. exhibition "Frontal Copies") , Innsbruck Cafe Filou 1983).

His autodidactic study of electronic programming languages and development of software based on public data networks ( X.25 network) since 1984 resulted in the discovery of the artistic "network multimedium: Hofstetter Pendel Uhrwerk", which was patented by the Republic of Austria in 1993, patent no .: AT 396040 B received. His nature studies, which he conducted in parallel, culminated in a diploma thesis on an input-output model of plant growth in 1986.

Through irrational generalizations, Hofstetter Kurt recognized in 1990 "parallelism and cycle" as well as "inclusion" (!) - explosion in relation to time, light, space and everyday life as the central concept of his artistic work. He always develops his own and original basis to open up new and unknown.

He has been a freelance artist since 1990 and has been running a media art studio in Vienna since 1991.

Planet of the commuters
with the 3 time moons

In addition to national and international exhibitions of the “Hofstetter Pendel Clockwork”, he realized the first permanent computer art installation in public space “Planet of the commuters with the 3 time moons” at the Landstrasse Wien-Mitte underground and suburban train station in 1992/93 . In 1994 the second permanent computer art installation " A Moment of Time " followed at the Vienna South train station. These two works are considered pioneering achievements in permanent computer art in public space.

In 1994 he took part in the telephone concert “Mreza / Netz” and contributed significantly to the concept and the music.

Hofstetter Kurt has been developing Möbius sounds electronically since 1995 - these are sounds that sound identical when played forwards and backwards, a temporal counterpart to the spatial Möbius principle. In contrast to musical palindromes such as cancer, cancer canon , mirror canon etc., they take into account the reversal of the temporal course of sound. The exclusivity or the system of simultaneous playback of sounds forwards and backwards becomes a composition strategy. This results in independent musical works - such as B. the 4-movement cantata: ZART una cantata moebius / 2008.

Möbius compositions have been part of experimental abstract art videos since 1995, which are created in collaboration with Barbara Doser (since 1997 under Parallel Media) and which focus on the interlinking of moving images and sounds to form optoacoustic synaesthetic units. In doing so, principles of potential infinity are used (video feedback - pattern formation through the principle of feedback in the visuals, Möbius principle in music composition), which lead the recipient to the limits of perception in order to simultaneously open up freedom for imagination. Videos and video installations were presented at international festivals for film, video, new media and screenings in museums and galleries.

His artistic inclusion of public data networks - such as the X.25 network in the 1980s and the Internet in the 1990s - led to the project “moving moments” in 1995, which has been set up for participation in the Ars Electronica Linz www-residence server since 1996. The simultaneous continuous examination of parallelism and cycle resulted in the global project "Sunpendulum", which has been implemented since 1997. In 2006 Sunpendulum Inplusion, d. H. completed the installation of twelve Sunpendulum Time-Eyes in twelve time zones around the world.

In 1999, parallel to the realization process, he developed the "Xtense Imaging" method, which generates never-recurring moving images live. He works with images of the sky - around 31,536,000 per year - that are imported online from the twelve Sunpendulum Time-Eyes. Using a keying process , a digitally created static image with the light and what is happening in the sky is regenerated and set into static movement at the same time . The change takes place permanently live and is of infinite variation - not least due to the rotation of the earth or the continuous cycle of day parallel to night. This is how his media art works emerge:

  • Complementary Light Pendulum, New Delhi Triennial 2005
  • Twilight Pendulum, ZKM Karlsruhe 2006
  • Spacing Time, MAK -CAT Flakturm Vienna 2007
  • Circum C, Seville Biennial 2008
  • Azzurro, collateral project Detournement, Venice Biennale 2009
  • kissing moons, Galerie Konzett Vienna 2010
  • fACING tIME, Vienna University of Technology 2011.

The realization of the Sunpendulum Explosion, in particular the planning of the Sunpendulum Station Phi , led to the artistic examination of elementary geometry. Since 2002, the simplest constructions of the golden ratio with compasses and rulers or with compasses alone have been created, which have been published as innovations in scientific peer-reviewed journals (see Scientific publications). In the artistic implementation, panel paintings such as Phi struct tiling, 2003 and sculptures such as NIC - nature is cool, 2003/2009 are created.

In 2007, his circular constructions also led him to the discovery of "inductive rotation" - a recursive method for generating infinite, aperiodic and asymmetric patterns. The iterative application of a simple recursion rule to a single part, the proto part, develops images of enormous complexity after just three iteration steps, which are already beyond the human imagination. The artistic implementation takes place in the form of printed works and sculptures up to sculptural facade structures of buildings.
