Hohenschwangau is a district of Schwangau . It is located around 800 m above sea level between the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles and is visited by around two million people every year who visit the royal castles from here. Parking spaces, restaurants, guest houses, hotels and souvenir shops shape the townscape accordingly.

Hohenschwangau is bounded in the south by the Alpsee . The Museum of the Bavarian Kings was opened on the banks of the Alpsee in 2011 .

On the northern outskirts there is a state boarding school : the state high school with the Hohenschwangau student hostel .

The Bullachberg Castle is located on the community road in the direction of Schwangau .

Water protection area

The place Hohenschwangau has been in the water protection area (Zone III) for the public water supply of the city of Füssen since 2016 - legally confirmed by the judgment of the BayVGH on August 28, 2019. The city of Füssen has been getting its drinking water from the wells in the Schwangau district of Alterschrofen since the early 1980s . More recent hydrogeological findings had shown that the groundwater to be protected does not flow from the area around the Schwanseepark , as previously assumed , but from the south-east under the Hohenschwangau location from the Alpsee .
