Holger Fransman
Holger Alexander Fransman (born February 10, 1909 in Helsinki , † January 19, 1997 ibid) was a Finnish horn player.
Fransman studied horn in Vienna with Karl Stiegler , whose last pupil he was. During his time in Vienna he also met Gottfried von Freiberg , Stiegler's nephew. In 1932 he was appointed third horn player in the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra , where he became principal horn in 1937. He held this position until 1967. In addition to his work as a soloist, Fransman was Professor of Horn at the Sibelius Academy from 1931 to 1973 . Because of his work as a teacher he was called the "father of the Finnish horn school".
The Finnish Horn Club awards the prestigious International Holger Fransman Horn Prize in memory of Fransman.
