The state of Finland is rated as a liberal state in Europe with regard to its view on homosexuality . The marriage is open to gay partners in March 2017th The registered partnership in Finland has existed for same-sex couples since 2002.

Homosexuality was legalized in 1971. The age of consent has been adjusted.

Anti-discrimination laws

Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation has been prohibited by law since 1995. Homosexual persons are not excluded from military service.

Same-sex partnerships and marriage

Since 2002 it has been possible for same-sex couples to have their partnership recognized. Registered partnerships were allowed by law. The first same-sex couples married in Finland on March 8, 2002. The path to insemination has been open to lesbian couples and women since 2006 . In May 2009 another law made it possible to adopt the partner's children.

In July 2010 the Finnish Justice Minister Tuija Brax announced that she wanted to open up marriage to same-sex couples, as did Iceland, Norway and Sweden. In March 2012, a corresponding draft law was introduced in parliament. A vote on it narrowly failed in February 2013.
Another vote in plenary to legalize same-sex marriage took place on November 28, 2014, at which the Finnish parliament accepted the proposal of a citizens' initiative with 105 to 92 votes and spoke out in favor of introducing same-sex marriage. In a further vote in the Finnish parliament on February 17, 2017, the opening of marriage, including the joint adoption right, was again approved on March 1, 2017 with 120 to 48 votes with two abstentions. The change in law came into force on March 1, 2017.

A Eurobarometer survey in all EU member states from December 2006 showed that Finland is one of the most open-minded countries in the EU towards the rights of gays and lesbians. 45% of Finns are in favor of same-sex marriage. A homosexual community can be found primarily in the capital Helsinki . A Christopher Street Day takes place in Helsinki every year.

In September 2009 the only Finnish gay magazine Voltti des Akilles-Verlag stopped its publication for financial reasons, at least for the time being, after it was awarded the Salli Journalist Prize by the Finnish Association of Magazine Editors in the same year in recognition of the high standards of its concept and the quality of the Implementation was awarded. This is the first time in 40 years that a Finnish LGBT magazine has not been published.

The bishop of the diocese of Tampere Matti Repo and the politician Päivi Räsänen expressed their opposition to homosexuals on a television broadcast in 2010, which led to an extraordinary increase in church resignations. In 2014, the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Turku Kari Mäkinen apologized unreservedly for the "cruel treatment" of homosexuals and other sexual minorities by the Church.
