Homs - A Destroyed Dream is a Syrian-German documentary by the documentary filmmaker and author Talal Derki . It is a coproduction of the Syrian producers Orwa Nyrabia and Diana El Jeiroudi of the company "Proaction Film" and the Berlin producer "Ventana-Film" by Hans Robert Eisenhauer with the television stations Südwestrundfunk (SWR), ARTE and the Swedish Sveriges Television (SVT). Other participating television stations are the Swiss television station RTS, the Japanese station NHK and the Canadian station "Radio Canada". The editor is Gudrun Hanke-El Ghomri (SWR), Claudia Bucher (ARTE), Axel Arnö (SVT), Tomoko Okutsu (NHK), Gaspard Lamuniere (TSR) and Jean Pelletier (CBC - Radio Canada).

The film premiered on November 20, 2013 at the 26th International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in the Netherlands . The TV premiere in Germany took place on March 4, 2014 on Arte .

The producer Orwa Nyrabia was detained for three weeks by Syrian security forces because of this film. Today he lives with his wife in Berlin.

The documentary is about the civil war in Syria . From August 2011 to August 2013, director Talal Derki accompanies two friends in the city of Homs who are organizing demonstrations against the dictatorial regime of President Bashar al-Assad in the documentary. After the Syrian security forces take military action against the demonstrators, the initially pacifist friends decide to arm themselves and become resistance fighters against the Assad regime. The documentary shows the career of the main character Abdul Baset Al-Sarout , from the goalkeeper of a youth soccer team to the commander of a small group of fighters on the side of the Free Syrian Army in the camera very close to the events of the cruel civil war in a destroyed city will be shown.
