Horst F. Rupp (born October 19, 1949 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber ) is a German Protestant theologian and religious educator. He teaches and researches as a full professor for religious education and didactics of religious education at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg .

Life

Horst F. Rupp studied Protestant theology , German studies , psychology and history at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and at the University of Zurich from 1969 to 1978 . In 1975 he passed the teaching examination for high school education in the subjects of German and theology, followed in 1976 the theological entrance examination for the spiritual office of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria and in 1978 the state examination in history. From 1978 to 1980 he passed the teaching traineeship for high school service in Bavaria with the second state examination. From 1980 to 1983 he was a temporary academic advisor at the chair for religious education at the University of Bamberg (assistant to Rainer Lachmann ). In 1985 he received his doctorate in theology at the University of Erlangen (topic of the dissertation: Religion and its didactics with Mrs. AW Diesterweg . A chapter in a history of religious didactics in the 19th century). After three years as a teacher at a grammar school, Rupp took on a position as a research assistant at the Institute for Protestant Theology at RWTH Aachen University . In 1991 he moved to the University of Koblenz-Landau , Dept. Koblenz , as an academic councilor .

After a substitute for a chair at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and his habilitation there (1993; title of the habilitation thesis: Religion - Education - School. Studies on the history and theory of a complex relationship) he was appointed to the Würzburg chair in the winter semester 1993/94 called. From 1998 to 2000 he was dean of the Philosophical Faculty III of the University of Würzburg, from 2000 to 2002 he represented the faculty in the university's senate. From 2006 to 2011 he was the speaker of the "Conference of theologians involved in teacher training in Bavaria" (KLT). The retirement took place on April 1, 2015.

In 2000, Rupp was at the center of a controversy surrounding the Creglingen Jewish Museum . In a dispute with his colleagues on the board of directors of the Creglingen Jewish Museum, to which Rupp was a member at the time, he demanded that the period between 1933 and 1945, in particular the Creglingen Jewish pogrom of March 25, 1933, be adequately taken into account in the museum conception and presentation. This controversy received national and international media attention. As a result of these disputes, Rupp was removed from the board.

The focus of his research is on historical (religious) education, especially in Diesterweg research. He designs religious education or religious didactics conceptually based on the concept of education. The guiding principle for him is the formula: Religion needs education - education needs religion. Further focal points of his teaching and research activities are Judaism and its didactic communication in the (religious) didactic context as well as (auto) biographical research in the field of religious education.
