Life

Horst Kächele completed his psychoanalytic training in Ulm in the 1970s . He was committed to empirical psychotherapy research , which at that time was still viewed with skepticism by institutionalized psychoanalysis. He also took the view that it had harmed psychoanalysis to decouple itself from academic science and to organize it in its own institutes. Kächele was President of the Society for Psychotherapy Research in the 1990s and promoted the establishment of therapy research in Latin America. The promotion of clinical psychoanalysis in the successor states of the Soviet Union and in the former Eastern Bloc was another area of work. With Helmut Thomä , his predecessor at the Ulm chair, he shared the principle that the hypotheses of psychoanalysis must empirically prove themselves.

Thomä and Kächele gained international recognition with numerous publications. Your textbook on psychoanalytic therapy has now been translated into more than twelve languages. On the other hand, the Ulm School of Psychoanalysis also provoked resistance. In the paradigm of the empirical foundation of psychoanalysis and its scientification of training, one saw a departure from the classical heritage.

Kächele was editor of the journal Psychotherapie Psychosomatik Medical Psychology . From 1988 to 2004 he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Lindau Psychotherapy Weeks . Kächele was a senior professor at the International Psychoanalytic University Berlin (IPU).
