Hubert Robert (born May 22, 1733 in Paris ; † April 15, 1808 there ) was a French painter.

Life

Hubert Robert studied with the Jesuits at the Collège de Navarre between 1745 and 1751 . Michel-Ange Slodtz taught him perspective and drawing, after which Robert decided to turn to painting. In 1754 he went to Rome with Étienne-François de Choiseul , who was the French ambassador there . This association was initiated by Robert's father, Nicolas Robert, who was in the service of the Marquis of Stainville, François Joseph de Choiseul, which helped his son's career. Hubert Robert spent a total of eleven years in Rome. There he met many artists, including Giovanni Paolo Pannini and Giovanni Battista Piranesi , who had a great influence on him.

In the course of the Great Terror of the French Revolution, Robert was initially held in the prisons of Sainte-Pélagie and Saint-Lazare from October 1793 and was freed after the fall of Robespierre . Robert was a Jacobin and a member of the National Convention . Together with Johann Heinrich Riesener , he was a member of a commission that prepared expert reports on the confiscated furniture of the nobles for the revolutionary auctions.

The design of the sarcophagus for Jean-Jacques Rousseau in the park of Ermenonville was made by Hubert Robert, executed by the sculptor Jacques-Philippe Le Sueur (1757-1830).
