Hugo de los Reyes Chavez
Hugo de los Reyes Chávez (born January 6, 1933 ) was governor of the state of Barinas of Venezuela from 1998 to 2008 . He is the father of the former President Hugo Chávez . Chavez has Indian and African roots. Both he and his wife were village school teachers before going into politics. Chavez later became "Director de la Educación" . At first he was active in the Christian Democratic party COPEI until he joined the Movimiento Quinta República party led by his son in 1998 . In 1998, Chavez was elected governor of the State of Barinas with 43.56%. In the early elections in 2000 he was re-elected with 52.57% of the vote. In 2004, Hugo de los Reyes Chávez stood for re-election again and achieved 76.26%. In 2008 he was replaced with 50.48% by his son Adán Chavez , who ran for the United Socialist Party of Venezuela .
Hugo de los Reyes Chavez is now also a member of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).
