Hui Cheung-wai

Hui Cheung-wai ( Chinese  許翔威  /  许翔威 , Pinyin Xú Xiāngwēi , Jyutping Heoi 2 Coeng 4 wai 1 , * 1963 in Hong Kong ) is a Chinese composer .

Life

In 1986 Hui studied composition with Hwang Yau-tai . Since 1987 he has taught at the Hong Kong International Institute of Music . Composition studies with Chen Ning-chi followed . In 1989 he obtained his diploma. In 1996 he graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) with a Bachelor of Arts (Hon). In 1997 he completed the Master of Music .

He has been editor of the Music Companion since 1990 and published the Vademecum A Treasury of Chinese Music in 1998 .

He became an advisor to the Hong Kong Guitar Orchestra (composer in residence since 2008), the Hong Kong Music Institute and the Tuen Mun Children Choir. Hui is the chairman of the Hong Kong Music Institute Alumni Associatio. In 2002 he became an honorary composer of the Hong Kong Harmonica Association.

In 1987 he achieved his breakthrough with Yun for piano. His music has been performed by renowned orchestras (including the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra ) and chamber music ensembles (including the Arditti Quartet and Ensemble Sortisatio ) worldwide (including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center ). So far he has composed 150 works, including a. Electronic music, film music, vocal and instrumental music.

In 2006 he was music director of the concert on the 100th birthday of Professor Harold HT Wei.

Since 1998 he has been a lecturer at the CUHK.
