Hungaroton

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hungaroton is a Hungarian music label . It was founded in 1951 as a state company under the name "Qualiton" and in this form had a monopoly on record production in Hungary until the end of the Eastern Bloc , similar to other companies such as VEB Deutsche Schallplatten ( GDR ) and Melodija ( Soviet Union ).

Hungaroton has always focused on classical and light music . During its time as a state-owned company, more than 10,000 recordings were made, which have been increasingly exported since the mid-1960s. In that decade, the name was changed to Hungaroton and the sublabels Bravó, Krém and Pepita were created for the field of light music.

The political upheaval at the end of the 1980s almost cost the label its existence. The original company was wound up, but activities continued in a different form. Since 1992 recordings from popular music have been released under the label Hungaroton Gong, while since 1993 the Hungaroton Classic recordings from the field of classical music, literature and other things have been released. In 1995 privatization followed. However, since the Hungarian state wanted to keep control of the archive from the Eastern Bloc, it kept a stake in the separate company Hungaroton Music through a golden share of leading shareholders.

In 1998, Hungaroton Gong and Hungaroton Classic were merged to form today's company, Hungaroton Records. Even today, the focus is still on classic recordings, a small part of the annual releases also consist of re-releases.

The current catalog shows the music, the game, the voice and the works of almost all important artists from the past 70 years. Hungaroton strives to record the music of the next generation of great Hungarian artists who, despite their young age, have already achieved international fame. From time to time, however, our own legendary recordings and treasures are presented to newer generations of music listeners through new releases and modern platforms.
