The Hurricane Harvey was the eighth cyclone of the Atlantic hurricane season 2017 . At the end of August 2017 , it caused enormous damage in the Caribbean states and the southern parts of the USA, especially in the states of Texas and Louisiana , and at times reached level 4. With a damage amount of around 125 billion US dollars, he is together with the Hurricane Katrina the most expensive hurricane in US history; Adjusted for inflation, it is the second most expensive after Katrina.

Hurricane Harvey struck the Texas coast near Rockport on the evening of August 25, 2017 . The speed of the strongest gusts was approx. 240 km / h (category 4) and severe flood damage was expected as the storm only moved very slowly. There have already been power outages in over 200,000 houses and ten deaths due to collapsed roofs. In a few days there was rainfall between 300 and 600 liters per square meter. In some places 1000 liters per square meter should have been possible. President Donald Trump declared Texas a state of emergency after Governor Greg Abbott asked him to do so. Hundreds of thousands were brought to safety on Friday. On the morning of August 26 Harvey was the National Hurricane Center first on a hurricane category 1 and eventually to a tropical storm downgraded.
On August 28, 2017, flight operations at two airports in Houston had ceased, two hospitals had to be evacuated and numerous roads had been flooded. The residents were asked to go to the roof of their houses.
As of August 31, a total of 30 people had been killed by the hurricane and only in Houston are estimates of 40,000 houses destroyed. The National Weather Service announced rainfall of 125 cm since Friday evening.
